ArcticCross #6 saw another great day of cyclocross racing. Some mud, some sand, and some fast pavement made for great racing. In the Junior Women race, Zoee Beiergrohslein faced her toughest competition of the year today in Cadence Stull, the two rode together for the first part of the race, then Zoee proved to have just a bit more experience on the hills and pulled away and held the gap to win by just over 15 seconds. Zoee is the first ArcticCross racer in 2011 to post a perfect 300 point season, congrats Zoee! The Junior Mens race had a big field today and saw Davey Biegel edge Jonathan Burgess for the win. Max Beiergrohslein came through third and in doing so, claimed an unassailable lead in the overall competition. The Master Womens race saw the usual suspects come out and hammer it down, and once again Margret Cunningham took a convincing win over Shannon Titzel with Jill Valerius coming in third, just three seconds later. The Master Mens race also saw many of the same faces battling it out at the front. After a hot first lap that won him a fine beer, Mike Howard succumbed to a hard charging Jens Beck in the second lap and eventually finished just over two minutes down on Jens who is looking like a strong candidate for the overall ArcticCross series honors. Behind them, Ed Sniffen came through in a solid third place. The Open Womens race saw the return of last year's champion, Amber Stull, and she didn't dissapoint. After the second lap, she had already ammassed a lead of 1:30 over Nylene Warner, and she kept the pressure on to finish just under two minutes ahead. Jill Simek, Laura Gardner and Laurel Brady battled it out for third place and in the end Jill took the honors, finishing just 13 seconds behind Nylene. The Open Mens race saw it's fair share of carnage, mostly in the second lap. From the start, Will Ross put the hammer down with the goal of winning the coveted first lap, hot lap beer prime and he delivered, taking the prize easily. At that point, the lead group was still fairly large at 8 riders including Will, Carey Grumelot, Brent Gorman, Tim Berntson, Jeff Ellis, Dan Nordendale, Jamie Stull and me, but going into the second half of the course, first Jeff, then Will had flat tires, then Dan took an unfortunate line and found himself watching the rest of us pass by while he was on the ground. After all the carnage, it came down to two groups: Carey and Brent off the front and Jamie, Tim and I racing for third. Brent and Carey were fairly evenly matched with Carey having a slight advantage in the technical sections and Brent having the edge on the faster sections. In the end Brent dropped his chain coming on to the field, and Carey rode on to a hard fought first place. Behind them, Tim, Jamie and I were trading attacks, until, with about 1.5 laps left I got a gap on the pavement, Tim rode back up to me, while Jamie almost managed to get back on as well once we hit the roots. In the end Tim and I rode into the field together on the last lap, but third place was decided when Tim bobbled around the last switchback and I was able to coast across the line. Results below:
