I am planning on doing a pre-ride of ArcticCross #5 on Thursday, 9/29 meeting at the Anchorage Curling Club parking lot at 6:15pm. We'll be checking out the course for possible fun features and to see how the route looks since we haven't raced there since 2009. For those of you that don't know where the curling club is, the address is 711 E Loop Rd, Anchorage, AK. Google map that address and you will find it.

Results for ArcticCross #4 at APU are up. Sorry for the delay, I have been out of town. Since I wasn't at the race, I don't have much of a recap, but the results are as follows: Zoee continued her dominance of the Junior Women with another win, Luke Jager took the Junior Men race. In the Master Men, Jens Beck got the win while Shanon Titzel took the Master Womens race. Open Women saw Nylene Warner return after being absent from the last race and take her third win of the year. Finally in the Open Mens race, Brent Gorman took the win over Carey Grumelot after riding the whole race together. Full results are below:

Bruce has hooked up a great deal with the Career Academy Sports Massage folks, they will be sending a team of students to the race this weekend to practice their skills. What does that mean for you? Free massages before the race to help warm up and afterward for post race fatigue and muscle tension!!! They will set up near the ArcticCross timing tent this Saturday before the first race and will be there until we wrap up sometime around 1:30pm.
I will be at APU tonight (Thurs) for a pre-ride of the course this weekend. We'll be meeting at the stadium at around 6:15pm and scouting the course, come out and check it out.

I hope everyone liked the run-ups tonight, it was certainly fun finding all those hills to run the course on. Well, Jens managed to break his bike yet again, that's 3 times in 3 weeks now, and Luke Jager was standing on the side of the course after about 3 laps, not quite sure what happened there, but I did see his Frankenbike in the shop just 2 days before the race, so I suspect that there are some outstanding issues with his ride. Without having the chance to watch the other races most of my report is going to be second hand info, but here it is: In the Junior Mens race Joseph Kincaid took the win two minutes ahead of series leader Max Beiergrohslein. In the Masters Women division, Margret Cunningham convincingly took her third win in three races. The Masters Men race saw local triathlon legend Jens Beck take an emphatic victory over series leader Mike Howard. The Open Women category was the tightest race of the day. It looked like Tiffany Novakovich might ride away with an easy win in the first part of the race, but she faded slightly in the second half while Laura Gardner put in a great effort and nearly reeled her in but fell just short at the finish line. The Open Men race was fast from the start and a group of three riders comprised of Tim Berntson, Carey Grumelot and Brent Gorman rode off the front leaving Jamie Stull and Dan Nordendale to chase. The three leaders extended their lead until the last lap when Brent put in an acceleration and first shed Carey, then Tim on the way to his first victory of the cross season. Tim made a strong push on the stretch leading back to the stadium and finished just behind Brent, while Carey crossed the line solidly in third place.
Next race is this Saturday at 11am and 12pm at APU.

Do you recognize this hill?
You will on Wednesday at 6:30pm.
Hint: It's at Kincaid.
But don't worry, there are plenty of off camber corners and other goodies to keep you on your toes too. Four hardy souls joined me for the pre-ride tonight and they got a pretty good look at what the course is going to be. The rest of you will just have to wait until Wednesday to find out all the fun details.

Another great day and a great venue with lots of technical sections and a fair share of mechanical issues: Jens broke his saddle for the second week in a row, Brent rolled a tire, Dan had a first lap flat, and I tore my rear derailleur completely off. There's probably more, but that is all I can remember right now. With all that aside, there was some great racing going on out there. Once again Zoee Beiergrohslein dominated the Junior Women field. Davey Biegel came out for his first race of the year and rode away from the rest of the Junior Men field. In the Masters Women race, Margret Cunningham finished a lap ahead of the next closest competitor. The Masters Men race was a great battle with Mike Howard taking about 10 seconds on Joe Pollock each lap and finishing with a comfortable lead on Joe, who took second. The Open Women field was great today, Nylene Warner came out on top again and Kristy Smith secured second place with a great ride. The race for third was a good battle, a strong group of 4 ladies were riding together for much of the race with places changing throughout. In the end it was Eva Latosuo that put in a strong and consistent ride to come in third. The Open Men race was the biggest of the day and from the start Will Ross, Carey Grumelot, Brent Gorman and I put a gap on the field. Shortly after Carey put in the race deciding attack in the third lap, Brent rolled his tire and had to run a half lap back to the wheel pit. He grabbed a replacement and continued on, which left Will to chase alone in second place. Jeff Ellis put in a great mid-race and rode into third place while Tim Berntson and I battled for fourth until I got a pin flag caught in my derailleur and was forced to run the last half lap. I crossed the line just ahead of a somewhat despondent Brent who had managed to ride back to 6th place after his earlier problems. In the end, Carey, Will and Jeff filled the top 3 in that order.
Maps are up for the next three races. Go out there and pre-ride, but be aware that these are only approximate and will definitely change slightly when we set up on race day.
Also I am planning on doing a pre-ride at Kincaid on Monday at 6:30 pm for all that are interested. Meet at the lower stadium parking lot and check out the course.

The groundskeeper at Abbot-O-Rabbit park has requested that we don't bring dogs to the park. We would appreciate if everyone would respect his request since they are generously donating the park to us this Saturday.
The course is looking great, lots of off camber turns and a couple of run-ups, we even found a bit of mud to ride through. Get your best grass gripping tires ready for some fun this Saturday, 11Am and Noon are the race times, come out and enjoy the Alaska autumn.

If anyone is interested in checking out the course for ArcticCross #2, we will be out there on Thursday the 15th at 6:30pm to do a little course recon at Abbott-O-Rabbit park. All are welcome to come check it out and see what the course might look like come Saturday. Realize that the course that we pre-ride is approximate and that when we set up on Saturday, there may be some changes, but this should give you a good feel for the terrain.
Also, note that the directions to the venue printed on the course map are incorrect, the course is on the corner of Lake Otis and O'Malley (not Abbott) as shown on the map.
What: Pre-ride ArcticCross #2
Location: Abbott-O-Rabbit park

We had some great racing at APU to kick off the 2011 ArcticCross season. Zoe Beiergroshlein crushed the Junior Women field while her brother Max did the same in the Junior Men race. In the Masters Women category Margret Cunningham took the title convincingly. Mike Howard took the title in a very competitive Master Men race. In the Open Women we were missing our top two finishers from last year due to injuries, but the racing was still excellent and saw Nylene Warner come out on top. Finally, in the Open Men race the usual suspects came out to hammer it down and overall champion from 2010, Will Ross, edged Brent Gorman for the win in the closest finish of the day. Thanks to all for coming out and helping with course setup/take down. Photos can be found at Alaska Digital Visions. Full results below:
